Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an evidence-based treatment. There is strong evidence that Schema Therapy is an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions including trauma, depression, social anxiety, eating disorders, and personality disorders + more.

Schema Therapy aims to identify and then modify longstanding, often tenacious,  maladaptive/unhelpful patterns of beliefs (or schemas), all of which can lead to ultimately unhelpful behavioural patterns that can get in the way of our relationships, our identity and the choices we make. Schemas or ‘negative, maladaptive core beliefs’ can lead to low self-esteem, lack of connection to others, problems expressing feelings and emotions and excessive worrying about basic safety issues. The beliefs can also create strong attraction to inappropriate partners and lead to dissatisfying careers.

What makes it tricky is that our core beliefs about ourselves, our significant others and our world can often be unconscious.  These belief patterns often emerge in childhood.  Despite us not being consciously aware of these negative patterns of belief, (or maybe because of this) these maladaptive schemas can often play an enormously detrimental role our lives.  They can affect the way we cope with our feelings, the way believe or buy into our inner critics (I'm sure most of us can recognise that demanding, guilt-inducing or mean voice in our own head), how we respond to our loved ones, bosses and colleagues, how we deal with conflict, how sucessfully we manage with big life decisions, manage our lives from a functionality perspective  (including how we eat, manage substances, etc).   Pretty much the list goes on and on.  The wonderful thing about Schema Therapy is that because we learn so much about ourselves, in a fairly quick and easy way, it  often helps with complex patterns even when other psychotherapy methods have been unsuccessful.

At the heart of Schema Therapy is recognising and then learning to address one's unmet needs, together with providing a safe place to address ways of providing corrective emotional experiences.

Beginning with a series of assessments you will learn to recognise which schemas and problematic coping styles affect you the most.  You will also start to understand the origins and learn how to modify the schemas, thereby helping us to have healthier patterns in a range of life domains.
