Transformational Chairwork

Transformational Chairwork is an experiential technique used in Schema Therapy.  It is based on the belief that it is healing and transformative for people to speak from inner modes or parts, and/or for them to enact or re-enact scenes from the past, the present or the future, in order to provide one experientially with emotionally corrective experiences.

Chairs, and other metaphors, are used to address at at times befriend parts of the self that are more hidden, or in our blind-spot area, to challenge our demanding, mean or guilt-inducing inner critics, to look at the ways that we manage our vulnerabilities using coping modes, and much more.

The ultimate goal of Transformational Chairwork is to heal, strengthen, and develop what is variously known as the healthy adult self mode, or the inner leader. This is a therapeutic ‘true north’ that can always serve to orient the work.
